Almaty Highlights the Importance of Skilled Trades

At the Central City Library named after A.P. Chekhov, a meeting was held that aimed to shift perceptions about the real drivers of urban life. Under the symbolic title “Skilled Trade — My Choice,” on July 30 in Almaty, the focus wasn’t on celebrities, but on those who ensure the city runs smoothly — mechanics, firefighters, hospital orderlies, and drivers.

The event, organized as part of the Year of Skilled Trades, brought together young city residents and true professionals to demonstrate that today, skilled trades are not just in demand — they are the foundation of sustainable societal development. In an atmosphere of respect and genuine interest, guests shared not only the technical aspects of their work but also the stories of perseverance, dedication, and pride that define their professions.

Among the speakers were individuals recognized not by media fame, but by their daily hard work. Donisbay Akhanaev, a mechanic at the Turkestan district branch of “Almaty Su,” and Makpal Kozhamseitova, driver of trolleybus #9 — both recipients of the “For Diligent Labor” award — shared their professional journeys. Dauren Sherikbai, senior firefighter-rescuer of Fire Station No. 12 and civil protection sergeant, spoke about daily routines where every minute can save a life. Ainagul Sissenova, an orderly at the Republican Scientific Cardiology Center, reminded the audience of the importance of care and compassion in professions that often go unnoticed.

Instead of dull lectures, the event featured personal stories. Instead of slogans, there were honest conversations about challenges, responsibility, and the deep satisfaction of knowing your work truly matters. The young attendees didn’t just listen — they asked questions, shared opinions, and reconsidered their career goals.

Almaty is increasingly emphasizing the value of essential but often overlooked professions. This gathering at the library served as yet another confirmation: skilled trades not only have a rich past but also a confident future.
