Republic-Wide Hackathon for Librarians Held in Almaty

Today, the Alatau Creative Hub in Almaty hosted “KitapHack,” a national hackathon organized specifically for library professionals. Librarians from all regions of the country participated in the event, which focused on reimagining library science through a digital lens and the effective application of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
During the event, participants formed teams to develop projects aimed at creating a modern library model. Their goals included expanding the range of services through digital tools and implementing innovative solutions into everyday library operations.
Each team presented their projects, followed by discussions and a peer-to-peer exchange of ideas. This collaborative environment resulted in a series of fresh concepts for developing library services and integrating digital technologies into the industry.
The program was further enriched by a theatrical performance by students from the T. Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts. The artistic performance highlighted the cultural and creative potential of library spaces and added a vibrant atmosphere to the event.
Special attention was given to presentations by young library leaders who had recently completed professional development programs abroad. They shared their experiences and discussed modern digital trends and practical directions for the evolution of library science.
At the conclusion of the hackathon, teams were honored in the following categories: “Flash of Insight” (Ұшқыр идея), “Creative Idea” (Креативті идея), “Technical Solution” (Техникалық шешім), “Innovative Project” (Инновациялық жоба), “High Social Impact Project” (Әлеуметтік әсері жоғары жоба), “Quality AI-Based Solution” (AI негізіндегі сапалы шешім)
Zhainar Ardakkyzy, a librarian from the Atyrau City Library, praised the event’s significance: “The event was organized at a very high level. We met colleagues from different regions, exchanged views, and discussed the future of the library sector. I hope that such meaningful and professionally relevant events will be held more frequently in the future.”
Organized by Almaty Libraries, this hackathon serves as a powerful testament to the industry’s commitment to renewal, innovation, and strengthening its role in the cultural and educational life of Kazakhstan.
